Q: My Ethernet is "Flapping"

Weird one, pulling my hair out.

My Gig Ethernet connection (whether through the Thunderbolt adapter from Apple, or generic USB ones) will start to go down. The behaviour is that it is unable to acquire an IP address, switches over to Wi-Fi, then gets an address, and then fails again, and the cycle repeats.

If I reset the SMC, it fixes it for a random number of reboots (usually less than five).

The machine, when running Boot Camp (yay Windows 10!) works flawlessly, so I don't think there's a hardware fault.

I've tried purging a world of plist files related to networking (too many to list here), none of which seem to help.

Any clues on why this is happening?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
