How did I end up with two iCloud passwords for the same account?

How did I end up with two iCloud passwords for the same account?

For security reasons, I only use iCloud for Contacts and "Find my iPhone".

Several months ago Apple forced me to change my iCloud password. So I did this. Over the last several months I have successfully used the new password 10 or 12 times when requested without issue.

However, I got a notification of a software update for my Apple watch. I did the update without a problem. However, after completing the update my iPhone asked me to log into my iCloud account. When I did this it rejected my password. I made 4 attempts typing very slowly and carefully to make sure I did it right.

Then, operating under a hunch I decided to enter my old iCloud password. It worked? I'm confused about this, any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi

It may help to unpair and re-pair your watch.

Before pairing your watch again, check that you have updated your sign in information for all services on your iPhone:

What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support

The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).
