Q: iPad App Store won't allow program

I just bought an iPad 9.3.3, for traveling & I have Lion on my desktop, most is synced. [many problems with Mavericks] But:

     1. I have a 3rd party program on my desktop, iFamily for Mac, but the iPad won't download it - message says:

"Download Failed, Safari cannot download this file"

At the Apple Store, genius said I had to get it through the App Store, but the App Store doesn't have it, I've tried every which way to get it. nada, So, back to iPad to download, same old same old.

     2. Mail is waco. On my desktop, when I put some mail as Junk, it stays that way. Every time that mail comes in, it goes directly to the Junk box - But NOT on the iPad. I get the same "junk" daily, in the regular inbox. [98 in 1 day, sometimes 200 + of 'em.] In fact, when I "move" stuff to junk it doesn't move… at all. So I have to trash it again & again. [several times for several accounts.]

What's with iPad & App Store? I feel like I was robbed.

Any ideas? Genius & "helpers" at the store didn't / couldn't resolve either issue.

iFamily for Mac is just that for your Mac. If the program developer does not have a version of the program for the iPad then you will not be able to use it on the iPad.

Have you logged into your email provider's website and classified the emails you want to as junk so they skip the inbox and go to the junk folder? Any emails that go to the inbox of your email provider's inbox will go to your iPad as well.

OPPS you're wrong on both counts. IF you're asking a question, the iFamily developer [it's a genealogy program] sent me the "Download" directly to my iPad. If that's a statement - YES - he does have it  to use it on iPad & others do so  with NO Problem!  He's got it up to work with El Capitain as well & he's working on setting up for the next version, Sierra now.

As to my E-mail provider, Verizon, I have all those settings on their site & my Desktop. So, once again, not "other" program or provider's problem, but iPad's & Apple's. ALL my mail comes to my computer / iPad & is immediately deleted from the verizon web page. I KNOW they go to both mac & iPad, the problem is - NO setting on iPad to permanently assign mail as Junk, so it won't go into my inboxes.

Oh, get this, just got 38 E-mails . . . in 3 hours . . . all junk . . .  Pressed Edit, Move - to junk, NADA - was not in junk box, & still in my in box!

iFamily for Mac is just that for your Mac. If the program developer does not have a version of the program for the iPad then you will not be able to use it on the iPad.

I am a strong enough person to admit when I am wrong. If this is their website: http://www.ifamilyformac.com/support/ there is not any support information for the iPad. If the app cannot be found in the App Store on the iPad then it is not supported.

We're all here trying to help. Some replies will. Some replies won't. Hopefully another user will be able to provide you with the answer you are seeking.

    Cheers

You cannot download and install anything on the iPad in the manner that you describe. The only way to install apps on the iPad is through the App Store. That is why it won't work. Ask the developer why the app is not in your country's App Store.

Thanks, OOOFFF, but FYI, I've done that. it isn't on "support, but on "forum" I put a request on that, & also E-mailed the creator as well. [He actually answers back - which is how I got to the second download, no extra charge!]. But I just thought maybe, just maybe, that someone in the mac community, who uses a desktop & iPad, & is also having problems with downloading a 3rd party program [that they have on their desktop] to their iPad could help me solve this problem.

My big quandary is 1.] that the Store Genius said I must go to the APP Store to download anything, which to me is so dumb. It has e other Genealogy programs, like Reunion [yuck], but not iFamily. And 2.] why, when all's OK with my desktop version & he has the one for iPad, won't Safari download it? also dumb, since the Genius said most are 3rd party. This guy's been doing this since Leopard! Doesn't Apple know that?

Thanks any ole who, at least you tried to figure this out.

Won't happen, since you cannot install apps in that manner.

While you may feel it is dumb, it is the truth. The Genius told you correctly, you can only install apps on the iPad through the App Store. Always been that way.

    Hello Kathylpv,

First, regarding the app store, you must realize that iPad is not a small, flat, Mac. It is a completely different computer, with a different OS, etc. Developers have to do significant work to create an iOS version of a desktop app. Apps are accepted into the app store when it meets Apple's requirements. So I'm not sure what type of link the developer may have sent you. Maybe you could ask them for instructions on how to use it.

Second, regarding Mail. It sounds like you're using POP to access your mail accounts. In that case, you receive all your mail on both computer and iPad. The iPad Mail app is not very sophisticated. Some time ago I switched to AltaMail (not free). It has extensive features, including folders for each account, and rules to direct messages to them. Their support is also very responsive.

Further thought on this app. Your developer may be sending you an unreleased iOS version of the app. If that's the case, you'd need to download it to the Mac as a simple file, then get help from the developer on how to install it. We cannot help you with that since it requires methods reserved to registered app developers.

It is dumb, since I downloaded this app long ago & it's not a download as much as it is an "update" of it. So, why must the App store control what I have on my computer? I got this mac - Because - it was to be "user friendly" & "done MY own way" not like the constraints of the PC. Guess that means Apple has become more dictatorial. & would I have to pay Apple for a 3rd party program [that I already bought]?

I just checked that site and did not see anything related to an iOS version of your app; in fact, they appear to be concentrating on older Mac OS versions.

However, be that as it may: you can only legally download apps onto your iDevice if they are available through the app store.

    Diana & Chris,

Gotcha. I know that the "iPad is not a small, flat, Mac. It is a completely different computer, with a different OS, etc. . ."

Just checked, as of Dec '15 the developer hasn't been able to do the program for iPad. I saw this before, but thought he'd been able to do so by now.

So, there's my answer, but ****, it's Why I got the iPad! . . . so when I'm visiting my "kids" I'd be able to do research & put any found data into iFamily right away. Guess I'll have to send the links & data I find via E-mail to my desktop.

    Diana, About Mail, you wrote:

"Second, regarding Mail. It sounds like you're using POP to access your mail accounts. In that case, you receive all your mail on both computer and iPad. The iPad Mail app is not very sophisticated. Some time ago I switched to AltaMail (not free)."

I have verizon. & at the store yesterday they tried to put in the iCloud/ iMac in, instead of POP, but it was denied. As to another E-mail account, I have verizon & iCloud, & don't want / need another. Besides, I tried to create a google [before my iCloud account] & it messed up the verizon mail.

So, again, I'm just plum out a luck there too. Still don't understand, sophisticated or not, why you can't label something as Junk & have all of that place go directly into junk with iPad. Doesn't make sense. IF any Mac Geek can figure this out, what a boon to iPad users that would be. They would be heroes!

Thanks for all of your info & putting up with my discontent on this issue.

A little web searching makes it very clear that iFamily for Mac is indeed an OS X only application. There is no version for iOS.

LIke it or not, the sole Apple supported option to install software on any iOS device is the Apple App Store. If the software you want is not in the App Store (or at least, your country's specific App store) then you cannot install it on an iOS device (at least not without using unsupported hacks).

As I said, the iPad is a completely different system. Installing a iOS app is not simply downloading an update to a Mac program bought long ago. It requires the developer to create and test a completely different version of the software. If the developer puts a price on the app, you'd pay him for his work, even though you already own the desktop version of the program.

AltaMail is a mail app, not a service. It has more features and configurability than the iOS Mail app. You can check out the free version and see if you like it.
