localhost/web server mac os x 10.6.8

I've downloaded a website template that I previously hosted on ArcGIS online because I want to customize it further. From what I've read on the internet, it sounds like I can test my customizations through localhost.

I can get to localhost. It says it works, but when i insert index.html, the .zip, or the unzipped, it doesn't look (uturn.co.nz).

The only part of index.html I've amended is appid="64f4a989a44445fe85788a6a27282ece" on line 47, so I think that's where the problem is, or maybe my file structure?

I am able to get to my localhost. It always comes up with "It works!" When I try to load the attached folder, it doesn't work.

I get to my localhost and then I click on the folder and unzip it. It needs to be zipped initially correct? When I load the folder unzipped, I can't see it in the localhost. Then, I click on index.html in the downloads area and get the following error message. "Application loading failed. The application has to be accessed through a web server. Consult user guide.

I've also tried just just putting index.html in my sites folder. All the mac tutorials I read say to do this, but then I get this image when I try to go through my localhost.

Would you be able to provide further clarification on the following as well?

1. Is local host a web server?

2. Local host and web server are already activated on Mac OS X 10.6.8, and there aren't further steps I need to take like for other later systems?

I appreciate any advice you have. I am completely new to servers.

This is the code.

http://localhost points to a web server on your local computer. We have no idea how your site is coded or its directory structure. You need to duplicate the site's structure in your Apache document root directory, assuming your site can be served by Apache and it does not need a server such as Tomcat or IIS. Your local server must also be running the same database and structure as your site does online. It must also be able to serve the code behind, php, java, c#, .net, etc. For example, if it is a .net coded site your server must be able to serve .aspx pages.

So you need to do a lot more research before anyone can tell you how to run your site on a localhost server.
