Can I register for Apple care after my mac broke?

I completely forgot to register Apple Care and the store didn't do it automatically. Now my mother board needs replacing because it randomly broke one day, a problem tgat a lot of users seem to have; and it costs $1115NZD, which is an absurd amount of money.

If I register apple care now will it cover costs? My laptop is still 2 years old.

shrekinah,

I've been in the same situation as you. My macbook pro had a hardware issue and needed to be serviced. When I called Applecare to setup a repair, my Applecare Plan was not registered to my computer. I explained to the agent I did purchase the Applecare at the same time I bought the computer then the agent transferred me to another person ( can't remember what department) and she told me to fax in my receipt that had my Applecare Plan purchase date. After several days, I sent my computer for repair without an out of warranty cost.

Here is the Applecare Plan Information:

So I believe as long as you can prove you purchased the Applecare with in the year of the computer you should be covered. (NZ not sure). You will need to contact Apple and explain the situation. Only Apple can resolve this issue with your Applecare Plan.

Here is contact information for New Zealand.

Good luck!

AppleCare can only be registered while the machine is still covered by the initial 1 year warranty. If you failed to do so, it's to late. You can't register it after the fact, just like you can't purchase insurance to cover your belongings after they have been stolen.

As for your rights under consumer law, you'll have to talk to whatever government agency oversees that or a lawyer.

As KiltedTim says, the Apples terms would exclude you. But depending on the laws of New Zealand you may have a case under their consumer rights. Here in the UK that can stretch as far as 6 years in rare circumstances but the key will always lie with getting technical support. If the fault is a well documented one that would be easier, but you would normally have to pay the technical costs of establishing your claim and claim them back later ... and if you lose ?????

I think you should check your consumer's rights people ... and keep us updated with the result.
