Aug 19, 2016 2:56 AM in response to Annarackby Roger Wilmut1,If you are updating the Flash Player to a new version (and it's advisable to keep it up to date) you don't need to uninstall the existing player first. You should only get the player from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ - do not install it from any pop-up warnings (Adobe do these but there are also fake ones).
If you want to get rid of it altogether, uninstall instructions are here:

Aug 19, 2016 3:00 AM in response to Roger Wilmut1by Annarack,Oh dear I've been updating them from the pop ups on my iMac all this time. I'm concerned now.

Aug 19, 2016 3:09 AM in response to Kappyby Annarack,Its because it was explained to me in the comment that some pop ups are fake, so thats why I was concerned. I was on the occasion getting pop ups to update twice a week which I thought was odd, but then I don't know much about these things. But should I just leave the adobe updates alone then and not bother uninstalling?

Fixes for Adware and Pop-ups
- Malwarebytes
- DetectX 2.11
- Remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac
- Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support
[Please ignore remarks such as “Don't use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product on a Mac.“ Such remonstrations are an exaggeration. They may be needed in some situations, but need not be installed or used for all circumstances. Furthermore, adware removal programs make the job of removal much easier. They require no permanent installation to remove adware or other types of malware. They do no damage, and they don’t make you more vulnerable to attack.]

Aug 19, 2016 3:35 AM in response to Annarackby Roger Wilmut1,Depending on how you've set the preferences, Adobe may bring up pop-ups which warn you to update; however some websites may bring up pop-ups which are actually fake. To be on the safe side it's best to download the installer from the link I gave, then you know you're safe. You've probably been using Adobe's pop-ups anyway, which are also safe, so I shouldn't worry about it.

Aug 19, 2016 3:45 AM in response to Roger Wilmut1by Annarack,Ah ok. When I get the pop ups, I get the installer showing on my desktop which makes me think it is legit and I also eject it when its finished installing. I also get put through to the adobe site that says the installation is complete.
On another note how do I check the preferences?

Though not pop-ups in the sense of something brought up by a web-page, the Flash Player prefs have an option for notification:
The notification comes in the form of a small black pane which appears on its own. This is OK to use, but my choice is always to use the link I posted earlier, then there is no doubt whatever about what you are getting.

System Preferences: the Flash Player prefs are on the bottom row, and you can choose the notification or automatic download settings in the 'Updates' pane (see image in my reply above).
