Q: Photos killing internet connection for entire network in El Capitan and Sierra (solution)

I hope this helps someone out there.  It took a lot of research and trial and error to figure out.  This is a solution, and not a question, so moderators, please put this in the proper area - I am sure this is probably not the right one.

ISSUE: My internet connection crashed and this had been the situation for the past several weeks.  I was using a hotspot from my phone for connectivity it was so bad.  If I would run a speed test, it would register .03Mbps.  Internet company came out (twice), replaced everything, new modem, switched, everything.  Modem was getting a strong signal but it wasn't reaching any devices.  Spend literally days trying to figure this out - running constant speed test.  Kind of a fluke, but I noticed if i turned off my wi-fi antenna, my other devices got full internet back.

This is my note to the At&T internet tech:

"I figured out the problem - its a mac issue.  If you ever see this again, this is how to diagnose it.  If they have a mac running El Capitan or Sierra (the two newest versions), it will have a feature for the Photo program that tries to upload the entire library - and sometimes loops endlessly (this is the bug). When it does, it will take ALL the bandwidth and choke off the internet.  The way you can tell, if you turn off the WIFI antenna on the mac, and the speed goes back to normal on all other devices.   You can see this if you look at the activity monitor - Application Folder->Utilities Folder -> Monitor Program - >Network Tab.  You will see a function sucking the bandwidth called NSURLSESSIOND.  Immediate fix is to launch PHOTOS, Click on PHOTOS->PREFERENCES->iCLOUD TAB, either unselect ‘iCloud Photo Library’ or pause the photo updating (it does this for 24 hours).  Network activity will go back to normal, connectivity issues solved.  NOTE: You will still have the problem if you hardwire the computer to the modem, so wifi isn’t the issue."

Hope this helps someone!

Interesting but I didn't and don't have the problem with El Capitan or Sierra on more than one Mac. It does take awhile to upload a large Photo library depending on your connection speed. I've never experienced a Photo's "loop". Perhaps some have. Might have been a bad install.

Guess your a lucky guy!    Well I did and many, many people are having this exact same problem.  If you do a google search for NSURLSESSIOND, you will see dozens of people with this issue.

I doubt if it is an install issue, but that sounds like a great thing for Apple to investigate.

As I mentioned, no doubt bad installs or they are running a third-party app causing a problem. "Luck" doesn't enter in how a computer runs. In OSX or any other OS.

    - I am not running third party installs

    - I have not reinstalled my OS

    - Dozens of other people are having the exact same issue

    - The actions I took solved the problem

    - OS bugs do not affect all users the same way, lots a different factors involved, so LUCK is involved

This has happened to me as well.

Although turning off or pausing the upload does in fact postpone the problem, it's not a solution. I wish Apple would build into Photos the ability to manually adjust the upload speed (bandwidth used). Google Drive, Dropbox, and others allow this. Apple does not, and it's very annoying. I love Photos, and the non-destructive nature of using it for photo editing, but really wish it would give control over the upload speed. You can also search for Network Link Conditioner in reference to this problem. It's a dev tool that allows to limit up/down bandwidth speeds. This is a work around as well, as it limits the entire computer and not just one app.

I am glad you have also found that partial solution.  It has to be affecting a lot of people and it can really cause chaos on your home network.  I tortured the poor AT&T guy - he could not figure it out.

I have uploaded my photo library, just like Dialabrain, I had no problems at all with the upload. So he is an expert after all.

    You are incorrect.

By your definition, every person that has successfully uploaded their iphotos library is an 'expert'. That means there are probably 30 million experts out there, which is factually incorrect.

EXPERTS are people who are knowledgeable about a topic, can identify an issue (even if it has not happened to them), and can make meaningful suggestions to resolve an issue.

Someone saying that something is not an issue because it hasn't happened to them is in clear violation to the Code of Conduct for the communities and should refrain from wasting everyone's time with 'speculation' <---not supposed to speculate, clearly written in the code.

Calm down, everyone who does not have your problems is not a troll.

Once again, I have had no (none, zip) problems uploading photo libraries to iCloud.

Thanks Csound1. There's just no talking to some people. I'm taking my leave of this place. Good Luck.

If you haven't had the issue, WHY are you commenting?  To get points?
