Q: 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac that will not open folders in the hard drive

I have a 24-inch mid-2007 iMac running OS X 10.9.5, 2,8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (ouch!), 2GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDAM.  In the last few days, I cannot open folders (Desktop, Documents, a few personally created folders) in the hard drive menu.  A few times when the iMac tries to open one of them the results pixellate on the display screen where the file list should appear.  Machine has been functioning slow for quite a while even though the iMac is hardwired into a new Verizon FIOS Quantum router. Was told by a Genius not to upgrade to El Capitan.   I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem except to ask for help.  Thanks for any advice.  I want to be able to access these folders before I get a new computer in the next month or so.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Your HD may be failing. I would recommend posting an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

with only 2gb  El Capitan would likely be very slow

the pixellate stuff sounds more like a dieing video card

I would try to reset pram https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

to see if that did anything to help

Thanks for the tip about Etrecheck. I told Etrecheck that the computer was running slow.  It gave me the following information:  I need to upgrade the 2 GB RAM (which I can do) and I need a larger backup disk.

If you decide to upgrade the RAM your 2007 iMac may accommodate up to 6GB of RAM. New 27" iMacs may accommodate up to 64GB of RAM if you are interested. If you go shopping for RAM, only purchase from either Crucial (buy it direct) or OWC (www.macsales.com). The reason is iMacs are sensitive to quality RAM and both vendors have great reputations on these forums for service, quality products and competitive prices.

    Good luck!

Thanks, all.  I just ordered 4 GB of OWC memory (2x2GB) and that should give the iMac a big boost.  I'll let you know.
