Where did you buy the phone from? An Apple store or an Authorized Dealer? If so you are ok, if not it would be difficult to tell not knowing the source.

if you have any doubts call apple and ask them if they can trace the serial # or ID of the phone

Since you bought it from an Authorized Dealer I would not be concerned at all. Apple Authorized Dealers would not sell you a fake phone.

but if you buy on-line anyone can claim to be anything they want. How many Apple "authorized" entities provide that indispensable service where they find a virus on your computer and offer to fix it for several hundred bucks. I'm looking at a site right now with brick and mortar not 20 miles from my office claiming a Better Business Bureau rating of A+ saying they do mac Virus removals.

Oh, I agree... if the dealer "claims" to be authorized but they are not, they are running a scam. The OP can verify if the dealer is Apple Authorized or not.
