Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to keep in contact with your friends and family through Messages on your Mac.
I recommend you make a full system backup of your Mac. We want to ensure the data on your Mac is safe. You will need to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
Then, check this help article: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up. This article talks about what safe mode is, and what it does. Most importantly, if iMessage sends while in safe mode, the article has steps for you to go through to try to correct the issue in a section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode".
If you experience the same issues with iMessages not sending in safe mode, please open this help article and try in a test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. There is a section in that article as well titled "If an issue happens in only one user account" which leads you to another article for troubleshooting: Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.
Thanks again for seeking help here in the Apple Support Communities. Have a great rest of your day.
