How to reset Apple ID pswrd when email account used has been deleted?

My husband deleted his email account which was used as his Apple ID. Now he's forgotten his pswrd and can't log in.

he never set up the security questions and the only other option was to have an email sent to that deleted account 😟 what should we do in this case? We can't update anything on the laptop because of this. Any assistance is appreciated.
