I have Minecraft on my iPad but was purchased by my dad on his account. I have my own iTunes account and would be willing to purchase it again in order to tie it to my account. I wanted to keep my history and sstrings. I don't want to start over so I'm reluctant to delete the app first just to try. Any help?

I understand from your post that you would like to keep your Minecraft info when you download the app using your own Apple ID. The game history along with purchases is specific to each Apple ID. Unless the game developers provide a way to save history, you will need to start over again if you download it again under your own Apple ID.
Make sure you also update the rest of the apps that use your Apple ID as well:
