Q: I have a first gen iPod shuffle but I can't delete any tracks

I have an iPod shuffle and I'm trying to delete tracks from it. However when I plug it into iTunes every track appears greyed out, so I can't access any of them to delete some, which is what I want to do.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    Hello mike79kd,

Looks like you are having some troubles with managing the music on your iPod shuffle. No worries there Mike! Please follow the tips in this link to manage your tracks with ease.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Manage iPod shuffle If this does not do the trick, try using the

iPod Shuffle Support page for more troubleshooting steps.

Thanks for using Apple support Communities for assistance. You should be able to delete your tracks as you wish in no time at all.

    Cheers.

Hi JayB. Thanks for your response but I still have the same issue. Note that this is an early iPod shuffle and not 3rd gen. When I connect as in the last hint in the link you sent even the device button is greyed out. I can't get up the Summary or delete any files.

The 1st (and 2nd) gen shuffle can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time.  If songs are greyed out now, it may be because your current iTunes library is not the library used to sync songs to the shuffle.  If so, you'll need to associate the shuffle with your current iTunes library (which removes all songs from the previous library before you can add new songs).  Doing a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes also erases the shuffle and associates it to the current iTunes library.

Hi Kenichi, sorry to be a pain but when I connect nothing gives me the option to restore the Shuffle. Everything is greyed out - everything! I have never associated this iPod with any other iTunes library or computer.

If you are using the current version of iTunes, here's a screenshot of the shuffle's device button in iTunes (upper left corner of iTunes window)

Click that button (circled in red) to show the shuffle's settings screen (shown below), which has the Restore button (and other controls) for the shuffle

I have the same problem, iMac, Yosemite, iTunes 12.4.3. "Summary" does not show up, either.
