Let me preface this by saying I'm working on this issue remotely via a PC.
My Boss has a full sized mac keyboard. He tells me his delete key (above return) is only deleting things FWD instead of functioning as a backspace. He says sometimes it doesn't work at all. This is all a new occurrence.
Is this something that can be fixed with remapping or does the keyboard need to be replaced?

Using a keyboard shortcut to make a key work the way it did a few days ago is not a proper solution. Delete/Backspace is a pretty common key to use to have to press something in combination to make it work.
I'm afraid you don't understand. Keyboard Shortcuts is a document that lets you know what keys perform Delete Forward versus Delete Backwards. But if you aren't happy with that then take my second suggestion. Or erase the drive and reinstall OS X from scratch. If after this the keyboard is still not working properly, then most likely the keyboard is defective.
