Upgrading OS X

I have an iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with only 6 GB of RAM. My husband can no longer use the outdated iTunes on that computer with his new iPhone SE. Is it possible to upgrade the software on that machine so that he can sync his iTunes to his phone? Or have we maxed it out?
