Q: Safari/Mail not working

Safari has been acting weird  on my IMac the last couple of days. I keep getting messages on my regular websites (bank, weather, etc.) that "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded". Basically, other than Facebook, I can't access any websites. I presume I need to clean or defrag, but I'm not sure what the best way to do this is. Starting today, I'm not able to receive mail.

Any suggestions?

Typically, when you are having issues accessing websites and email, DNS is the main culprit. I can help you with at least the networking part to see if we can rule it out as the reason your iMac is having issues.

To start, let's verify your current network connectivity with your iMac. I am going to assume that it is running OS X El Capitan.

    To get network status:

    • Click on the Apple logo in the OS X menu bar > Select "About This Mac" > Select "System Report..."
    • On the System Information menu bar, select Window > Network Utility > Click on the Info tab if not already selected.
    • Under "Select a network interface for information" select the method that your iMac is connected to the network. Most likely, it will either be Ethernet or Wi-Fi
    • Once the interface is selected, the network status info will be presented under "Interface Information"
      • One item to note: Link Speed - This is the maximum potential bandwidth of the connection. This should be 1 Gbit/s for Ethernet for an iMac that came out since mid-2005. Prior to that it would be 100 Mbits/s.
    • The other area of interest will be under "Transfer Statistics," specifically the "Send Errors" & "Recv Errors" values. These should be zero or very close to zero. High error counts would indicate an issue with the network connection.

    Ok, now on to DNS:

    • We will continue using the Network Utility for this test.
    • Click on the "Ping" tab.
    • Enter the URL for one of the problematic websites. Leave the "Send only 3 pings" option as is.
    • Click on Ping

For example, I just ran a Ping for www.apple.com, and got the following results:

    CapturFiles.png

For a successful Ping, all three packets should be transmitted and received without any packet loss. If you get any or all packets lost, try the Ping again, but this time use the site's IP address instead. You will note in my above example, that the IP address for www.apple.com is 23.55.164.22

Again, we are looking for similar results, all packets sent and received without errors.

    Please post back your results.

Unfortunately, this did not help. My link speed was 100 Mbits, but should be 1Gbit according to the above information. There is no solution as to how to get there. The ping worked with zero packet loss. Currently, the internet appears to be working better, but I am still not receiving email. I am not sure if this helped or not, but I also installed the latest software update.

My link speed was 100 Mbits, but should be 1Gbit according to the above information.

The 1 Gbits/s would be the maximum potential bandwidth, not the actual data transfer speed ... so it should always be less than that maximum.

What are you using to measure speed? How is your iMac connected to the network ... wire or by wireless? What is the make & model of your Internet modem and the same if you use a separate router?

Currently, the internet appears to be working better, but I am still not receiving email.

How about sending email? If the issue is only receiving it, is it with all of your email accounts or a specific one? If just one, is it a POP or SMTP account? Which method do you use to access it ... web browser or dedicated email client, like OS X Mail?

I am not sure if this helped or not, but I also installed the latest software update.

It might depending on what software was recently updated AND if the issue started after doing so.

What OS and Safari version are you using?

    Safari 9

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

I am unable to send and receive email. I believe it is a POP account (that's what's listed under Account Information). I believe I use an email client. I just use the mail icon on my iMac.

I did. They were not at all helpful. In fact, I believe it made things worse. They were too technical for me. Someone who is on here asking for help, clearly does not know what they are doing. Techno jargon is useless to us.

Are you receiving e-mails in any account?

If you go to Mail/Window/Connection Doctor, are all the dots green?

Do you have the application Trusteer Rapport installed on your Mac?
