Q: iMovie keeps crashing on main account

I tried to use iMovie several times on my main account and it only allows me to create a new project, import one video/media, put it in the timeline and it crashes. If not, when I reopen it and attempt to click on an already existing project, it crashes immediately. I saw someone else complain about their crashing iMovie and was told to try it on another account, which I ultimately did. It worked perfect on a guest account but when I come back to my main account, it keeps crashing. Can I get some help here?

iMovie 10, iOS 9.3.4

    Hello kimseohyun,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with iMovie in your user account is not what you expect. Because you tested this in a new user and didn’t have an issue, this does narrow down that iMovie is working properly, and that the issue is related to your user account. I suggest using Safe Mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Once you're signed into your user account in Safe Mode, then restart normally and test iMovie again in your user account.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

    Cheers!

I tried using Safe Mode on my Mac but it didn't help... iMovie still crashes each time I try to open my project. I also tried to uninstall iMovie and reinstall it but, again, it didn't help. Any other suggestion?

Sorry that didn't work to resolve your issue. At this point you may need to contact AppleCare support, as they have more tools and resources for your specific issue with iMovie. Click this link to get started:

    Hi, kimseohyun,

Apparently there is something in your main user account that is conflicting with iMovie.   Have you added any applications lately, like Turbo Tax for instance, or any downloads from the internet, or any third party plug-ins, or anything you may have forgotten about?  You might try doing an applications search from the finder, by date added, and see what applications have been added that wouldn't be on your guest account.  Finder > File >Find > Kind > Applications > Arrange by > Date Added.   That will give you a list by date of when applications were added.   Try also searching by Executables.     If there are any new apps you might then try temporarily disabling them if you can, or moving them off your hard drive, one at a time as you launch iMovie to see if you can isolate the conflict.

All else failing, you probably need to contact Apple Support or a genius at an apple store and have them work through this with you.

    Best of luck with this.

Hey Rich! Thanks for replying. I actually tried to remove all the apps I downloaded since I got this Mac (which was in early July) but nothing is changing... I think I will contact Apple Support later. Thank you anyway!
