I Am thinking of buying a sim free i phone 6 from Argos in Northern Ireland but as I live in the republic of lreland I'm wondering if it will work

Northern Ireland technically being part of the UK, I don't see how you could have purchased an unlocked iPhone from someone other than Apple. The only source for unlocked iPhones in the UK is directly from Apple. Return it. You likely got a "sim free" phone which will lock to the first UK carrier used to activate it.
