Q: Upgrading to new router, aperture vault + file system questions

Currently running aperture 3.6 I've been using the same setup for a long time, which is a 2008 airport extreme, a 1 terabyte USB hard drive plugged into the airport's USB port, and a 2011 macbook. I use aperture vault to make backups to the external drive. The drive is formatted HFS+. I use it not only for backups, but also as a drive that I can access from both my mac and PC on the network (using airport disc).

My router is getting pretty old, almost 9 years. I'm looking into newer AC wifi routers, not necessarily apple. What concerns me is being able to use aperture vault, with a USB hard drive plugged into the new router. Does aperture require the drive format to be HFS+ ? If it does, will typical routers allow an HFS+ drive to be connected to them, and shared over the network, the way my airport extreme does? I don't know if this is an apple only feature, or if standard routers do this sort of thing.

I really appreciate the help in advance.

    1. The volume used to store an Aperture library needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended. If needed, you can create a disk image in that format and store it on one formatted differently.

    2. It's highly unlikely that a router other than an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule will support HFS+ volumes.

I recently mentioned (on this forum) that I used vaults as part of my backup strategy. I was told by several knowledgable users that vaults have become unreliable in recent versions of Aperture. I was advised to use Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, or similar for Aperture backups.
