Q: Macbook Pro MiD 2012 won't shut down on OS X El Capitan after several attempts

This issue started before the most recent update. 10.11.6 is what it is currently.

  • I have been powering down via the power button to restart the computer
  • Initially thought that old DigiDesign software was causing this, as I used to have an Mbox Mini 2. But I deleted individual files and folders however somehow the software still shows up in system preferences (strange...)
  • Disk Utility First Aid Check was done, no errors were found
  • Booted in Safe Mode a few times, first few times I was able to shut down no problem
  • SMC reset was attempted, unsure if it worked as the mag safe light did not change color and blink
    • Problem was not fixed
  • I booted via OS X Recovery Mode, reinstalled OS X over existing copy, did not fix the shutdown issue
    • Ran Disk Utility Via this as well and still did not help
  • Does not shut down via safe boot mode anymore
  • Utilized Console and noticed several issues showed up (how to pull this list? what would help?)
  • Ran the BASIC hardware test to no luck
  • Booted via Verbose Mode and was able to shut down via it
    • A few directories and things were listed as missing (how to get this list?)
  • I am able to open programs and use them except the Finder when it hangs up on shut down

Please help! I use Logic X and would really like not to have to format my computer.

    Hello hawk208,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to have your Mac shutdown properly. Thanks for providing the steps that you have checked already.

I recommend you make a full system backup of your Mac. We want to ensure the data on your Mac is safe. You will need to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, since you already tried this in safe mode, we want to check if the issue with shutting down happens in a test user, letting us know if this is related to your other account, or is system wide. Please open this help article to try in a test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. There is a section in that article as well titled "If an issue happens in only one user account" which leads you to another article for troubleshooting:  Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue.

Thanks again for seeking help here in the Apple Support Communities. Have a  great rest of your day.

I was able to finally resolve the issue after going through all the trouble shooting methods nothing helped.

turns out it was the DigiDesign Plugin. Which was in the main /Library folder inside audio/plugins/HAL once I deleted it, everything returned to normal.

    Thanks for the help!

How on earth did you find this out? It helped me too! Haven't figured out yet, would I need the plugin for something. Now it waits on my desktop for deletion.

    Thank you for your help!
