i wanted to restore my old iphone 4s using itunes but after downloading the software its taking longer longer hours to restore the operating system. the restore bar in itunes is full but my iphone screen only shows the apple logo and a bar that has loaded half way and seems to have stopped.

You posted this 5 hours ago. Is it still restoring? If so I would stop the process and restart it again.
To answer your question, a restore can take from as little a 30 minutes to many hours depending on connection speeds, the number of Apps that have to download, and the data contained on the backup.
