iMessage

I have a friend who has an iPhone and we've texted on iMessage forever. The other day his iMessage was messed up and wouldn't work for the whole day so we were sending regular text messages instead. His iMessage is now working again if he texts anyone else that has an iPhone besides me. How do we switch it back to iMessage instead of regular texting?
