Q: stop email addresses in spreadsheet table from launching mail

I'm compiling data in a Numbers spreadsheet and a lot of cells in the table have email addresses in them.

Each time I tap on the cell with an email address, it jumps to my Mail App and launches a new mail with the email address. That is so irritating cos I need to tap on so many address in the table and I DO NOT WANT my Mail App to launch. How can I stop this craziness? Please HELP!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Numbers version 3.6.2 (2577)

    Hi helix,

Drag Column A wider (or Format Panel > Table > Column)

Click on the white space to the right of the link to select that cell without activating the link

    Now edit

If you just want to edit the email addresses then widen the column so you can double click in the white space of the cell, this causes you to enter text edit mode.

To stop new data turning into smart links, go Edit > Substitutions > Smart Links (off)

I think you can only remove the hyperlink one at time (I can only test with 3.6), highlight link, right click, edit link, remove.

In older versions, with the separate inspector palette, you could just select all email addresses and then go to the Hyperlink tab of the Inspector and uncheck "enable as hyperlink.

    hi think.different,

thanks for the response. I learnt a few more things with your post.

however, just fyi turning off smart links via substitutions didn't work for me. not sure why though.

nonetheless, pulling the column wider has helped a lot! thanks too anyways.

turning off smart links only seems to work for new emails added not de-hyperlinking existing ones. If it is turned off and you add a new email address it stays as plain text.
