Other than an astonishingly refreshing lack of emoji, I'm guessing that your friend uses a strange font. What did they say they did?
She said she couldn't figure out what she did.. Any clue how to change the font?

With the introduction of iOS 8, users gained access to the ability to install custom keyboards. Custom keyboards offer new layouts, new shortcuts, and in many cases, new fonts. At present, Apple offers no option to allow users to change the system fonts aside from the scalability of fonts for accessibility purposes. As such, it is likely that your girlfriend installed a custom keyboard and unintentionally selected a new font.
