Q: Need help translating/understanding port terminology.

Recently I have been having problems with a games in game chat ability.  I put in a support request with the game publisher.  They told me to make some changes to "outbound" and "forwarded" ports.  The AirPort utility uses the terms "private" and "public".  I am not certain how to translate from the terms that they use, to the ones in the utility.  Could someone please help me translate?  Here is what they said:

You should configure your routers to open the following outbound ports:

•UDP Port 88

•UDP Ports 12000 through 32000

•UDP Port 6250

•UDP Port 5060

•UDP Port 5062

•UDP Port 3478 through 3479

•UDP and TCP Port 3074

•UDP and TCP Port 53

•TCP Port 80

•TCP Port 433

In addition to the above, you should ensure the following ports are forwarded regardless of platform:

•TCP / UDP Ports 24100 through 24131

•TCP / UDP Ports 24500 through 24507

•TCP / UDP Ports 24300 through 24331

You should configure your routers to open the following outbound ports:

Outbound ports are not blocked unless you are running a firewall in the router.. and this is no issue on the airport because it doesn't have one.

Actually the problem is always inbound.. and normally you need to open all those ports to the private IP of the game console or machine you are running.

Please read Tesserax doco on opening ports for the PS4 or Xbox1.

It doesn't matter if you are using a different game console or computer the rules are pretty much universal.

He has full instructions on what to fill in for port forwarding (mapping in applespeak) in the airport.

    Tesserax open NAT PS4

    Open NAT Xbox

The ports you have listed here are probably not included because they are specific to doing

    chat in games.

And IMHO it is silly to use 3 rules when you can set one rule for ports,

In addition to the above, you should ensure the following ports are forwarded regardless of platform:

    •TCP / UDP Ports 24100 through 24131

    •TCP / UDP Ports 24500 through 24507

    •TCP / UDP Ports 24300 through 24331

    24100-24507

That is a range of 407 ports which is not a big problem.

Also note.. in the end it is hugely easier to buy and use a MS vista rated UPNP main router and simply use the airport in bridge. Apple decided nobody needed upnp for gaming consoles with an Apple router. IMHO they were wrong. There are people who do own gaming consoles.. even if apple don't make them and therefore don't care.. and do have an airport router they would need to open ports on. Forcing people to do this manually defies the whole idea of Apple architecture.. it just works.. NOT!! Both upnp and NAT-PMP (the apple incompatible equivalent) can and do coexist happily in OpenWRT for instance. So it is not that hard to accomplish if the will was there.

All game consoles work properly only on fully compliant upnp routers.
