Ok let me say this Can heat ruin the charging **** because I used a car charger and went to a store for 5 mins and when I came back the Cable was Heating where you plug it in the device and I remove it and the iPod worked perfectly then next day cones up the iPod was not charging I left it charging over night but no luck
Maybe you had a poor connection in the Lightening port on the iPod. In the car that heated up the port (and end of charging cable). This could have damaged the charging port. As a minimum it could have cased blackening/corrosion in the charging port hat is interfering with charging.
