Q: Monitor overscan issues HELP

I thought it would be a good time to update my Mac Pro tower to El Capitan from OS 10.5.

I had a 10.6 install disc, so upgraded to 10.6, all that went smooth. Then I updated to 10.7, all that was good too. Then, to the app downloads to get 10.11, installed it.

Here’s the problem.  I have two displays.  A Viewsonic and an Samsung.  Both have worked fine for a long time. For many years, after adding Eye TV, on startup, my monitors would first appear normal, then after a few seconds, go all psycho color, almost like they’re posterized.  The way I fixed that was to open monitors preferences, and under the color choice, there was an option to “turn overscan on or off.”  Whatever it was set at when it came up, I just toggle changed it, and the monitors would swing back to looking normal.

Now under El Capitan 10.11, when startup happens, for a split second on startup they look normal, then go all posterized, and stay that way.  When I open the monitor preferences, there IS no option tab anymore for overscan off/on.  I can’t get the monitors to swing into looking normal, no matter what I’ve tried. I’ve gone through all the monitor settings, tried using monitor set up utility, tried changing preferences in Eye TV, nothing seems to work.  You guys have any ideas on how I can fix this?  The monitors look like they’re on acid.  Just unusable in that condition. What should I do?

Have you updated the monitors drivers?

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System PreferReset SMCences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
