Q: Time Machine server shuts down

I've setup a home Server for my in-laws that is offering Caching and Time Machine to home network users.  This is the exact same configuration that I've got on my home network, so I expected no issues, and I have a working server to compare settings against.  However, in my in-laws case, it's not working.  Every time the laptop tried to connect to the Time Machine server for the first time, the connection is unsuccessful.  Additionally, the Time Machine component of the server turns itself off immediately after this failed connection.

So far, I've tried deleting server and wiping all settings in the /library folder, and reconfiguring from scratch.  No dice.

I don't see anything meaningful in the console logs or the server logs concerning time machine.

    Hi cpragman,

    - On the Server, check the location of the Time Machine Backup Destinations and delete any partially started backup images.  Check the location has read/write privilege for the user account used.

    - On the client, logged in with an Admin account,  rerun a TM backup, check via the console app, set search to backupd and check if any of the backupd events give any clues.

    Cheers, dwbrecovery

    Try these:

    - Recheck network configurations of the client and Server.

    - Recheck configurations of the Time Machine and File Sharing Services

    - Disable the firewall on the client temporarily.

    - Stop and Start the Time Machine and File Sharing Services from the Server app on the server.

    - if you still have the issue, move the Server.app to the Trash and empty Trash.  Reinstall Server.app from the AppStore.

( no data or config will be lost )

    - This discussion may be relevent.

Upgrade to 10.9.3: AFP server issue

    See how you go, cheers

i had tried all those already. my next step was to reinstall the OS and Server. Unfortunately the cable just went out here, so that won't be happening today.

I'll have to try again on my next visit In a few weeks.
