Internal Error 2356. Data1.cab

Hi,

I get this error while installing iTunes (ver 7). No matter what I do the error keeps popping up. I emailed SmartRegistry to ask them if it is a registry problem and they said their tool won't fix it (nice of them to say so).

I do have McAfee and read somewhere that this app may be interfering somehow but I am not sure so I hesitate to uninstall.

Any suggestions?

Mark

Thanks for writing back. I reviewed a few of these items... I did delete the temp directory and references to Apple and tried again.

I do have the latest Windows installer (3.1 - KB893803).
What I did find out is that my ASPI driver config is messed up and I do not know if this plays a role. The log file is here:
====================================================

Mean anything to you? As far as I can tell, iTunes is the only app (over time) to give me an install error.

good gracious.

plausibly, that might be causing grief on the PC. iTunes is a burning and ripping application, so a snarlup with the ASPI might cause grief on an iTunes install.

... the versions of ASPI components that are showing up on the PC are really old. have you upgraded this PC to XP from an earlier version of Windows at some stage?

if so, did you have any CD burning/ripping applications installed on the PC prior to the upgrade? what brands and version numbers were they?

I know... apparently a mess. However, my pc has worked fine for the 4+ years I have had it. It was new (from Dell) and it came with what is still on it. Sure I have installed and uninstalled programs but I am not savvy enough to go in and mess around with "the details".

As for updating the aspi components: I have been searching... as for the wnaspi32.dll file -- I don't even know (or can't find out) what version I do need. It was suggested to me to run the windows install cleaner but when I look into it I am not convinced that if I need to reinstall a lot of stuff that it is even worth the time and effort.

The pc came with the usual(?) Roxio player and I upgraded to Media Player 11. Oh, and back in the day I did use Napster.

Again, thanks for writing back.

well, i appreciate that you looked into this. As it turns out,I did grab the zip file from adaptec and did the rename thing, ... for whatever reason, the two files:
winaspi.dll
wowpost.exe
are version 6 (as I read somewhere) and after renaming them something internal happens. I also ran the aspichk as a standalone app (which is where that printed log came from) -- this checker tells me (for the above 2 files) this:
UPGRADE1101: Unable to get c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll version info size 0x00000714
UPGRADE1101: Unable to get c:\windows\system\wowpost.exe version info size 0x00000714

Now, in the zip file: aspi 472a2 there is a different checker: (also) APSICHK and this one shows that I have all 4 files at the correct version and yet there are 2 buttons and some text that look disabled.

What I still don't "get" is what the 2356 data1.cab error means. I suppose iTunes is looking for a file in here? I did a search on where data1.cab files are and I see it for Adobe8, Mahjongg and Nikon Picture Perfect (on my pc).
I looked into the CD (of drivers, etc) that came with the pc and there is a data1.cab & data2.cab files but I don't know what (if anything) i should do with them.

My nephew suggested I just buy a new cd-rw-dvd drive. iTunes may be happy with new driver files...

No wonder MAC is popular. PC's are great when everything is smooth but that seems to be rarely the case.

sorry about the delay. a bit tired and busy lately.

this is a curious one. data.cab files are associated with InstallShield-based installations. itunes 7.0.x installers are not InstallShield-based, although earlier versions are. so it's choking on an odd file. (something perhaps that it's trying to uninstall from a previous installation.)

so perhaps let's get an itunes 7 installer log to someone who can interpret installer logs.

1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
3. Type in a space, then the following line:

/l*v C:\log.txt

4. Hit return.
5. The installer will create a log file:

C:\log.txt

Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.

in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:

- A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
- The username you are using in the thread
- The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
- the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
- A concise description of the issue you are seeing
- The exact text of the error message you are seeing

squid_88:

The installer log file that I got does not seem to match. The log shows that the installation was simply cancelled. In any case, the current iTunes does not have a Data1.cab, so the problem is likely uninstalling the pre-7 iTunes. If you have not tried this already, I would suggest that you install the MS Installer Cleanup Utility to remove remnants of older versions of iTunes and QuickTime.
