Using a microphone with Mac Mini

I have bought a language learning programme to use with my Mac Mini. I want to be able to respond orally to questions through my Mac Mini, but can't find any help about microphone capability. Can you help please?!

The audio-in jack on the Mac requires line-in input which is amplified.

The headphone port includes a contact for a mic. See:

To use a discrete mic typically used with a PC with the Mac headphone jack you can get an y-cable like this.
