Q: new macbook hangs on open

Hi

My New macbook is 6 months old (Feb'16) - from day 1 when I open the screen (usually when I have been in transit) I get a blank screen, no response from the mousepad, can't power off or on - it can be like this from minutes to hours and then it just will come good again.  (Power levels are never a problem)

I have taken to the genius bar - the problem didn't present itself when I was there (and I have no idea what triggers it) - they ran tests and said there was nothing wrong with it.

If anyone else has/ had this problem - all help appreciated.

Specs:

OS X El Capitan

Processor 1.2Ghz Intel Core M

12"screen w/ retina

8GB Memory DDR3

    Hi there LuckyElmore!

Greetings and thanks for bringing your question about your MacBook hanging upon opening the screen.  I have a MacBook too and I know I expect it to be ready to go when I open the screen right away.  I'm happy to try to help you out.

As with most troubleshooting, when a symptom doesn't present itself at the Genius Bar, it can be a challenge to get to the bottom of it.  My first recommendation would be to do a Time Machine backup of your Mac to ensure that all your data is protected.  Instructions are in this link:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Once you've backed up your Mac, I'd like you to shut it down and do a safe boot.  I have the instructions below:

    Starting up in safe mode

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

    1. Start or restart your Mac.
    2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
    3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

If you don't hear a startup chime after pressing the power key, see what to do if your Mac won't turn on.

After you've performed the safe boot, test your Mac again.  These steps are good to help get on the path to resolving the sleep/wake, powering up issues.

    Take care!
