Aug 23, 2016 12:45 PM in response to Lexiepexby Jean N,Before I go any further with this, let me ask for verification.
First, BootcampAssistant will not let me delete it (send to the trash) as it is needed for IOS (it says)
Also, when I went to delete the Users&Groups, I'm not at all sure I want to NOT have these open when I start up.
(I took a screen shot of it, but the image insert won't let me use tiff format.
After working on this, I see in my storage info (About this Mac) I only have 7.58GB left (out of 243!)
Most of it is 'other'--maybe I just need to junk this device!
Never used CleanMyMac...I think I deleted it.
What is the technical meaning of 'uninstall'? If I just send it to the trash, isn't that ok?

Aug 23, 2016 1:29 PM in response to Jean Nby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
I have not used Boot Camp since Snow Leopard so I will pass on that.
There are several links in this search. Even the company that makes it has an Ad listed at the top.
I would use one of the Apple Discussion Links.
It is a long time since just removing the visible App in Applications or Utilities was enough.
We were talking about the Login Items - in System Preferences > Users and Groups.
Lex was suggestion that removing them from the list stops them starting up and therefore using less of the RAM type memory.
As you say though some might be better of staying.
I use TextExpander most here when I post such as the Signature section of my posts.
iTunesHelper does not seem to be an issue.
I did point out you seemed to have two apps listed here that might be doing the same thing fro different devices (TomTom and Garmin)
If they were both for Sat Navs then it might pay to delete (Uninstall) the software for one of them.
Most good software comes with an Uninstall tool/App
Sometimes you have to re-run the original install .dmg file to see it.
These will remove all the ancillary files that some apps dot about all over the place.
Whilst Delete and Uninstall may be aimed at the removal of something most seem to use "Delete" when talking about parts of the things that make that app work.
For instance I have four "extras" in System Preferences
These tend to be placed in the folder that deal with System Preferences Panes.
Flash also has an Internet Plugin part.
Other parts of it are dotted about.
Whilst it will stop working if your remove/Drag to Trash/Delete these parts the remains still take up Hard Drive space.
Flip for Mac (allows Quicktime to play some Microsoft Media files) has the System Preferences Pane, an App and a Folder in Applications.
As you can see the folder contains the Uninstaller for this app/Utility
Uninstall is the complete removal of an App or Utility and all it's associates parts using a dedicated tool or App.
Delete is a bit more wishy washy in what people mean but some things can have some files such as .plists removed which are recreated when the app starts up again and causes little or no harm (mostly Preferences resets).

Aug 30, 2016 4:07 AM in response to Jean Nby Jean N,I'm sending my Etrecheck results of yesterday AFTER an hour and a half at the 'hospital' with an Apple geek. He was able to expunge a ton of stuff, taking my storage number down to acceptable levels. 95.3 GB free.
And, although he tried, he was unable to get Message going in my MacPro.
His opinion is that it is corrupt, and that perhaps I should test it by getting another Apple ID opened to see whether something is wrong with my original.
Here's the data: Please let me know what you think, thanks.

Aug 30, 2016 5:13 AM in response to Jean Nby Lexiepex,Coincidence that I am back right now after you sent this etrecheck list.
At last the rubbish is now gone, after you removed it earlier, it was still there.
There is one thing the Apple "geek" should have done also:
as I said before the WDC drivers have to go: uninstall the WesternDigital software, OSX can handle the disk(s) very well and WDC is counterproductive. It probably has nothing to do with iMessage.
There are two things to try now:
1. on another mac, login with your apple id, and test iMessage: if it works there, sign off again and do a reinstall of OSX on your own mac: Start in the Recovers Partition, by holding the CMD+R keys while starting up, choose "Install OSX" from the menu (this leaves your user data untouched, but of course you have backups): it takes some time and downloads the OSX from internet, so you have to have a good internet connection.
2. If #1 also does not work on the other mac, make a new Apple ID and test it with that on your own Mac.

Aug 30, 2016 1:02 PM in response to Lexiepexby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
There are some things here that will not work.
Testing your Apple ID on another Computer/Messages app is a good test.
Testing it also in another User Account (Enable Guest or create one in System Preferences > User and Groups)
Apple IDs in Messages (And only Messages) for the iMessages account can be clocked at the iMessages Server.
For a few (Apple's Calculations) the Security feature that is supposed to stop other people from pretending to be you gets triggered when it shouldn't (Apple are aware but seem not to have enough details as to why)
Basically each device has a Device Specific Login.
ON a Mac this is using the Apple ID and Password AND the Serial Number which creates the IDS: yourAppleIDemail-Auth Token in the Keychain.
This means the Apple ID will work on another Mac, an iPad, or an iPhone.
As it is only the iMessages server it will work in FaceTime, iTunes, Game Center, Photos and so on.
IF all accounts (Mac User) do not allow your to Login then the chances are it is at Server level.
IF...
You are in the position where it is Your ID on your Mac then there is only one fix.
It means contacting Apple Support (Apple Care) and getting to at least a Level 2 and asking them to check the server and reset it.
Level 1s are Script led trying to solve Apple Care Hardware and Software issues.
It is an Apple ID issue which are free to fix but you need to be up the chain further.
They are still likely to want your to try things and do Data gathering.
Limit what they want you to do bearing in mind Updating, Upgrading and Reinstalling do not work.
They may tell you that the engineers will have to do the reset and it could take 24 hours to 5 days (as from other posts where people have reported back).
Reinstalling, Upgrading or Updating are not going to work.
IF another Apple ID works then the Serial Number is on the Logic board.
See Apple Icon Menu > About this Mac and th Overview tab.

Aug 31, 2016 3:40 AM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by Jean N,Good morning! (At least it is here on the East Coast of North America!)
After seeing the complications involved--and, having experienced my Apple geek cleaning out some of the trash--I think I'll forget about Message/iMessage on my MacPro! My storage problem seem to have been solved by you, for which I'm grateful. I have Message on my iPod Touch and that will have to do.
I want to send my profound thanks to both Lexiepex and Ralph Johns for their patience and good humor. Bless you both for helping. I do think you are performing a valuable service and I'm sure I'll be back to the forum for more help some time soon.
With this computer as old as it is, I think the solution may be to just replace it.
Cheers!
Jean

Aug 31, 2016 5:20 AM in response to Jean Nby Lexiepex,Good sofar !
If it is a server problem: follow the advice of Ralph.
If it is a corruption on your mac, my last post should solve it.
But, at least you can use Messages on your iPod. Good enough perhaps.
We are very glad we could help, and thank you for your kind words: that is what we do it for
Lex
