I'm trying to install a version of AutoCad on my macbook air, which currently has OS X version 10.11. The version of autocad I'm trying to install says it will only run on 10.6.4 or older. Is there a simple workaround for installing this older version of Autocad on it? Right now the only solution I can think of is a virtual machine, but that seems a little cumbersome.

It is highly likely that the version of AutoCad you have is coded for PowerPC which could only be executed by Rosetta which was support up until Snow Leopard. Since you new Mac will not be able to run such an old version of OS X, there is no way to support that version of AutoCad on your Mac.
No, it cannot be installed for El Capitan. You need to get an upgrade: See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. Or visit the AutoCad website to find an upgrade version. Otherwise, you can search for a shareware or freeware replacement. There is a compatible version of AutoCad for the Mac.
