why am I unable to connect my ipods with my pc?

I have an Ipod Touch4 and have always had it connected to my ITunes account. Today I downloaded some music so I could sync it to my Ipod and the device doesn't show up as being connected yet under devices it shows as a camera. I tried to troubleshoot and it said it might be too old. The software is up-to-date and I have downloaded music many times. I also have a Nano and it doesn't show as connected either. I'm not sure what to do with it.
