Q: I have an Apple ID that is not an email address
When I attempt to update apps on my iPad from the App Store, the pop up dialog box lists tlettington as the Apple ID (yes this Apple ID is not an email address) and asks for my password. The password I have recorded does not work and I am unable to change it because the change password process rejects as invalid the Apple ID that is not an email address. There does not appear to be any way out of this loop and I have 18 apps that have updates pending. One or more of these apps appears to be linked to the artifact Apple ID although the update process hangs up in the same way on each of the 18 pending app updates. Included in the list of 18 are Garage Band, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and Kindle Reader.
This non-email Apple ID is an artifact from the days before all Apple IDs were required to be email addresses. I do have three other Apple IDs that are valid email addresses and I am able to logon with all three.

Apple support was able to correct the problem. The solution was to go to iTunes & App Store in Settings and log out and then log in with a valid Apple ID. This step apparently "reset" the Apple ID at the App Store.
