Q: Help needed on exporting from Photo App

I'm a photo hobbyest with thousands of pictures stored in my Mac using the Photos app. I already have them backed up on Time Machine and iCloud. However, I am trying to download some to an external hard drive but am having trouble.  The Photo app keeps CHANGING the resolution of my pictures when I export them.  Here is what happens...

  • I uploaded a 5MB jpeg picture in the Photo's app earlier this year.
  • Now I am ready to move a copy of this picture to my external hard drive.
  • If I simply move the original picture from the Photo's app to my desk top, the resolution DROPS from 5MB to 2.1MB.
  • If I export the "Unmodified Original" I lose all the edits I've made in the Photo's app.
  • If I export the picture in a "High" jpeg quality, it DROPS my resolution to 2.1MB.
  • If I export the picture in "Maximum" jpeg quality, it INCREASES my resolution to 14.3MB!!!
  • I have found NO WAY to download my original photo size!

Question.... How do I export or copy a picture from within the Photo's app to an external hard drive with the EXACT SAME resolution it is?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You first off have to understand resolution - file size is not resolution - the resolution relates only to the pixel dimensions of the image - the file size of a JPEG is determined by the compression you choose - compressing the image does not change the pixel dimensions at all - compression removes data form the photos and any JPEG in theory is lower finial quality than an uncompressed image like TIFF - but for virtually all uses it does not matter

When you export a modified version of the photo you are creating a new file containing the image and its files size is determined by the selections you make and has no resolution at all to the original file

Photos has limited control over file size - ir you want a specific file size then export a very high quality copy (maximum or even an uncompressed TIFF) and use a different program that gives you more compression control to compress it into the JPEG you want

But at the end of the day the file size really makes no different and it is highly likely that the large JPEG will give you the same results as an uncompressed TIFF

Thanks Larry!  Since you are a knowledgeable person, can I ask a follow up question... I checked the picture as you suggested, and you were correct, it was the exact same pixel dimensions!  So can I assume by this that the Photo app is simply compressing the picture greater than my camera did?  Does using the Photo app and higher compression offer any other concerns or detriments to the integrity of my original pictures?

Generally not - depends on the use of the photos - for most purposes even a medium JPEG is fine - there are few purposes that a large JPEG would not be fine for
