what happened to syncing with calendar on my mac?

Usually my iPad and Mac calendars are synced. This morning I made changes on my iPad and earlier today I saw them (though honestly, I can't remember if I saw them on the iPad or the Mac). Now neither device has my changes. Should I try to restore from a backup? I'm not sure how to do that.
