Q: Unable to Relink Camera Files to Media Files

It all began when I realized that I was unable to share my project. I was only trying to create a 'still image' at the time, which requires the share menu, and I discovered that the menu was greyed out. (By the way, the project is completely edited.) I also discovered that whenever I removed my memory card from my laptop, I would get the red error saying "missing camera." So at that point, I downloaded all media files from the memory card into a folder I created for them on my desktop. Then I went through the process of trying to "relink files."

In the 'finder,' only two clips would show up to be relinked. Once I relinked those, they no longer had the tiny camera icon in the corner of their thumbnails as they had been successfully relinked to the media files in the folder. They also no longer showed up as "missing camera" when I removed the memory card. The rest of the files, however, still remain to be relinked and I don't know why they don't show up in the finder when I try to relink them. That point is especially strange to me because only two clips show up though all the files are in the exact same place and were all imported at the same time.

Btw, I've tried transcoding/optimized media to no avail.

If you have encountered this issue or understand what's going on, please aid me. Also, please communicate in layman's terms as I am not a tech wiz just yet.

Thanks.

Try using the reimport from camera function to reimport from the the card. You can't relink media that hasn't been properly imported.

    Hello,

I forgot to mention that I've tried this. It took me through the prompts that explained what would happen once I reimported, however it never actually went through with the process.

Also, I just tried this option again, just to see if it might work this time, and the item is now greyed out on my menu.

You did the reimport from the card correct? Not from the material you copied over? Has the import completed? Check in the background task HUD. If yes, select a clip and use the reveal in Finder function. What happens?

I went ahead and ejected my sd card so that I see the missing camera error for those files.

When I click on one of the red files, and go to "reveal in finder," it is now greyed out.

However, "reimport from camera" is no longer grey, but of course I can't use that as I no longer have my memory card in. I would need to find a way to link to the files now on my desk top.

Does the card still have the media? If yes, mount the card to the machine. Open the application. Select the library and try the reimport from camera function.

When you copied the files from the card what exactly did you copy? You need to always copy the entire and complete card contents to be able to use it to reimport.

You cannot relink to media that was not properly imported.

When I imported from the card, I selected the clips I wanted and clicked "import selected." That's what I've been editing from.

Also, I just clicked "reimport from camera" and I got the first prompt. I clicked continue, and I see no evidence that anything has happened. Where should I look to know if it is reimporting? Where will it put the clips?

Select a clip and use Shift-Cmd-R for reveal in Finder and see where the clip is.

I have no idea why, but it is not allowing me to do that.

The odd thing is, it will allow me to "reveal in finder" for the two clips that I said are working properly and when I looked in the finder, the other clips it wouldn't allow me to find are there as well.

I just tried to grab one of the missing files (which are perfectly fine and in the right format etc.) and drag it from the finder into my event (or library, not sure of the correct term) and nothing happened. There was no error or anything. I just recently restarted fcpx and tried again. Same thing.

By the way, thanks for your patience.

Is your media stored inside the library or outside of it?

    Forgive the late response...

When I looked in the finder, it shows that it's in the library, and as I said, it's also now stored on my desktop and the memory card. This issue would make it appear that the media is not in the library, but I imported the clips.

IM assuming you haven't done anything inside the library bundle.

TRy this. Make a new library. Import all the media you need into the new library from the camera. Make sure the process is complete in the background task HUD before you do anything else. Drag the edited project from the old library into the new library in FCP.
