Q: Windows 10 Can't Boot After Installing Bootcamp Drivers

I have an late 2013 iMac (21.5”), and I just got Windows 10 so that I could install it using bootcamp. I’ve spent a good part of two days trying to get Windows to work with the bootcamp installation, but no matter what I do, the result is alway the same. If I let bootcamp install it’s driver’s (like it wants to when you first boot into Windows 10 after installing it), Windows will crash before it fully loads on the next boot. This involves seeing the windows logo pop up with the loading circle that spins around for a second, until the circle all of the sudden stops. After that, it reboots, and I hear the iMac starting sound (this time much quieter for some reason) and then it does the same thing. The third time that it reboots, it starts the automatic recovery mode and I get taken to the advanced startup menu. After letting Windows reinstall itself, it runs fine except that it’s missing some of the display driver’s (I can’t adjust the brightness) and I also can’t use the function keys on my apple keyboard, or the magic mouse at all.

I have tried reinstalling OS X El Capitan and then redoing the whole installation for Windows. I’ve tried using the driver’s that OS X downloads for me in Bootcamp (version 6.0), and I’ve also tried using the latest ones that Apple offers as a download from their site (Version 5.1.5769). All attempts at the Bootcamp installations result in the same boot crash once Windows is restarted.

Windows is still useable, I just wish that it would work like it’s supposed to for a Mac. Why are the bootcamp drivers breaking Windows 10? Has anybody else had a similar problem? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I did that and it worked! Everything is functioning as it should except that now windows won't let me create a restore point... Weird...

Also, the apple software update app wants to apply some updates, which could very well break the stuff that's working, I'll follow up if anything bad happens though.

Otherwise, thanks a bunch for suggesting that fix and watching this thread so closely!

Excellent. Please remember to back up OS X, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point.

There are two drivers, AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys. Replace the 5.x versions with 6.x versions and test your System Restore point.

Could you clarify what you mean by replacing the drivers? Do you mean to now try installing my drivers that my Mac's boot camp downloaded? Or do you mean that there should be another part of the older boot camp folder that I downloaded that has these newer drivers?

Also, will I be installing drivers individually or using another BC setup application like I just did?

    Thanks

If you boot into Windows, can you check the properties and versions of these two files? You may want to stay away from running the full setup to avoid the GPU issue, at least for a bit, till we figure out the Restore point issue.

O, sure thing, I'll check when I'm by my computer.

By the way, were you saying to not run the Apple software updates on Windows yet?

Please do not update software using Apple Software Update, till we get a clean System Restore point. There is a known issues between these two drivers, which allow access to OSX HFS+ volumes, and the Windows VSS service which is used to create Windows System Restore point.

well I looked in the older bootcamp folder that I downloaded and I didn't see anything named "AppleHFS.sys" or "AppleMNT.sys". The find function in Windows explorer couldn't find anything either.

So where would these drivers be located so that I can update them?

Look in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers . This screen shot is from the OSX side.

I see them. How would I go about replacing those though, since I didn't see any drivers with those names in the BootCamp folders? In other words, where are the 6.x versions of those drivers?

I have both 5.x and 6.x versions. They are fairly small files. I can put them in DropBox link. Can you check which versions you currently have?

Awesome!, that worked again! Windows just let me make a restore point! Thanks for giving me access to those.

Shall I try installing the Apple software updates now?

Yes, please try. If you run into issues, boot in safe mode and roll back to Restore point.

Well I let Apple push its updates. Everything is working fine.

Windows also wanted to push some graphics driver updates and so I let it do that as well. It seems like the brightness adjustment is working even better now, and Windows booted just fine after all those updates were done.

Seems like everything's now working like it's supposed to
