Q: Imovie Importing from camera

Having only used imovie for a short time after upgraded from imovie 11, it appears that the new version is designed to upload directly into into  iPhoto automatically without the choice of going into imovie.  I don't quite understand the reasoning for this by Apple, but my problem stems from the fact that I also seem unable to import the video from iPhoto unless I first export it to the desktop and THEN import it from there to an event file in iMovie.  I can't believe that there isn't a better way of doing this direct from the camera into iMovie, but as I haven't found it yet, I should be grateful if someone could tell me a more practical way of having all my initial imported videos all under the same roof so to speak, where they will be used, instead of being directed straight into iPhoto  I use El Capitan 10.11.6.

I am finding this newer version of iMovie a tad less intuitive than earlier versions and certainly more complicated, but understand that with the next step up to Final Cut, it can be a good training ground. I should appreciate a comment from anyone who has had this experience.

iMovie 10, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), imovie 10.1

    Hey there CMBP!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities to post this concern. It seems like you're wanting to import media directly to iMovie from a source or possibly import media from iMovie to iPhoto. There are several different ways of adding and sharing your raw media along with your finalized projects. Here are the most current resources to help with both programs:

    iMovie Help

iPhoto ‘11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries

    Photos Support

These will help get those libraries back in sync with one another. The latest Mac OS version is El Capitan 10.11.6 and is utilizing the new Photos Application. If you're interested in the transition from iPhoto to Photos, have a look here:

You most certainly can import from camera into iMovie directly. Simply connect the camera to USB port and open the iMovie import window and select the camera in the device list. If iPhoto is launching when you connect the camera you can stop that by opening iPhoto preferences>general  and change the connecting camera opens choice to no application.

Thanks for that Jim. I did what I thought was exactly what you suggested with no joy at all. It just did all that I described previously. However, I did eventually succeed after playing around with various sequences after an hour or so. My problem now is to discover how I actually did it and the right sequence. I did untick "copy to the photos library" under iPhotos preferences, but am not sure that was the reason for my success as I don't think I use "photos"... at least there's nothing in the folder. As my mate is always saying to me "Nothing is ever simple straight forward and easy until you discover the answer eventually" and I am beginning to realise this applies to the latest version of Apple iMovie.
