When inserting a CD I get no message asking me what action to take and have been so far unable to transfer any photos onto a CD I have a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and am wondering if I need to download or purchase an extra something to enable me to do this task. I have hundreds of old photos that I intend to scan onto my laptop and then transfer them to a CD

You can use the Image Capture app in your Applications folder to scan photos to your Mac.

For the CD, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Finder > Preferences then select the General tab then make sure CD's and DVD's is selected.
And check your settings in System Preferences > CD's and DVD's.
Do you want to create data CD/DVDs to store/archive photo images that can be read only by your computer or are trying to create a photo CD/DVD that you can view on your TV using a CD/DVD player?
