Q: Mail 9.3 not showing sent copies

In the past few days, Apple Mail is not showing copies in my Inbox of emails I send.  They usually arrive there since all my outgoing emails are bcc'd to myself.

They do show in my Sent folder and also in the Verizon webmail inbox listing of my POP mail server but are not picked up by Apple Mail - even an hour or so later.  Could there be an issue with the time stamp of the outgoing message?

    Hello travellerva,

Thanks for seeking help with your mail issues here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important mail is for everything these days. I will be happy to offer a few things to check to get your mail working again.

The first thing we want to ensure is that the data on your Mac is safe. You will need to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

My understanding of your issue, and the fact you are sending a new mail, and it is bcc'd to yourself, then you should receive it to the mailbox that is set to receive mail for that account. I am not sure what you mean with the time stamp affecting that, but the fact that it is a POP server may affect it. Once the mail is downloaded, it is removed from the Verizon server, and other devices will not receive it. If you are downloading that mail to another computer or device like an iPad or an iPhone, then it gets removed from the Verizon server, and will not show in the Mac Mail program. To get around this, you will need to complete steps from this help article to enable multiple devices to get the mail from a POP server: Get help if you have issues using a POP email account with more than one device

If that is not the issue, I recommend checking this help article: Mail (El Capitan): Mail troubleshooting. This article has all the links to articles based on your issue. I would start with the three links under the second section titled "Problems receiving messages". This will ensure the settings are correct, and the junk mail filters aren't set up blocking the mail you bcc'd to yourself. This second article also helps sending and receiving mail on your Mac, but it has some example screenshots of the alerts or error codes you may see: If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac.

This last article will assist you in using Connection Doctor to determine the cause of the issue with mail: Mail (El Capitan): Use Connection Doctor.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

    Try rebuilding the mailbox.

    Rebuild mailbox

If that doesn't work, try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Reindex messages        For El Capitan, try looking in V3.

Thanks for your comprehensive suggestions.  I have tried them all without success.  Perhaps I need to be more specific about the problem.

    1.  I have 4 email accounts.  The only POP account is Verizon and it is only in that account that the problem occurs

    2.  All incoming mail in the Verizon account is received ok in the Apple Mail Inbox; outgoing mail from Apple Mail is sent ok, too.  However...

    3.  Any sent mail through the Verizon account is bcc'd to myself, but the bcc never shows up in the Apple Mail Inbox.

    4.  Mail sent via the Verizon server goes to the recipient and also shows in the Apple Mail Sent folder, as well as in the Verizon webmail Inbox.

    5.  If I wait a few moments after sending an email (with the bcc to myself) and then click on Get Mail, the little notifier in the bottom left hand corner of the mail window pops up, showing "Downloading Message" for several seconds, then disappears.  No message appears in the Inbox, however.

    6.  If I then do a search for the bcc mail message, the only copy that shows up is the one in the Sent folder that was there when sending the message in the first place.

This problem only started occurring about ten days ago and is persistent.  All other Apple Mail functions are ok.

I have rebuilt the mailbox and reindex'd it per Linc Davis' guidelines with no effect.

Color me embarrassed.  I found the problem and it is my fault.

On checking the many rules I set up, I found one of them that must have been created in error.  It says that if an incoming mail has myself as the sender, it should go to trash immediately.  Obviously this is the problem.  I deleted the rule and everything is fine now.  Thanks so much for your suggestions.  At least I now have clean indexes!
