iCloud problems with Outlook - 0x80040604: Up/POST:Conflict[no-ctag,p06-contacts.icloud.com]

Hi - my Outlook uused to work perfectly with iCloud, but a few weeks ago it stopped doing so and I found that it was listed as a disabled Add-in in Outlook.

I tried all sorts on advice from google searches etc, including uninstalling iCloud and then downloading it and trying to start it.

On restarting iCloud, during the initial merge and sync steps, iCloud stopped the sync (I think at step 4) and said that an unexpected error had occurred. Given the chance to "Report" this I did so and found that it was telling Apple by e-mail about the error shown above in the title of this discussion.

Can anyone help me to fix this please?

Thanks Mike A

Hi Mike,

just encountered the same problem and I figured out a fix. It is not a great fix and I am not 100% certain if it is universal, but it worked its magic on a client's computer and after hours of trying herself - and failing - , my customer was super happy with it.

In the end, all I had to do was to create a new outlook profile in the control panel and to set it to standard. Before setting it to new standard, I started Outlook and created a new data file. (You do not have to configure an email account to begin with.) When you sync, icloud for Windows syncs in the new profile.

And this is why it is not a great fix: Now you end up with two profiles. One with your icloud data and another one with your other accounts. If you have other accounts, you have to get them into you new profile, i.e. in the case of POP-accounts importing the data files and configuring email accounts, in the case of IMAP-accounts configuring the accounts and syncing possibly dozens of GBs....

I did not find any other solution! I used the online repair of MS office, I temporarily disabled Norton Antivirus, I disabled all other Outlook add-ins, I reinstalled icloud for windows, I used scanpst.exe to repair all other PST files (you see, I even started doing things that I saw had no direct connection with iCloud). This was the best I could come up with.

Hope it helps you a bit!

Take care

When I got this error code, I tried everything under the sun, starting with repairing my outlook.pst file, followed by signing out of icloud, then signing back in, uninstalling and reinstalling icloud, and uninstalling and reinstalling outlook. Also tried a restart. Finally, I replaced my outlook.pst file with a backup copy, and everything suddenly worked. My thought is that the outlook.pst file got corrupted (which seems to happen way too often), and replacing it was the only solution. If you don't have a backup copy, perhaps deleting it would cause outlook to create a new one. Of course, you'd have to set up your e-mail account(s) all over again. Hope this is helpful.

Had the same issue (and error (MAPI 0x80040604)). Nothing on-line helped. I got the same issue 5 times in a row SO, I stopped trying. I then went to iCloud and created a new calendar and then deleted all of the other ones. I then deleted all contacts. I then went back to my PC and ran the iCloud set up (ticked mail, calendar etc) and this time all of the sync processes ran. Sadly, I then noticed that every entry I had personally entered into my PC calendar (not outside invites) had to be re-moved (not removed!) to iCloud. Now all is working AND now when I put a new entry into my iphone it now appears on my PC, the issue that kicked all of this off. I don't know what part above triggered a successful outcome but it worked.

I would always recommend backing up your .pst files before you start, just in case!

I am having an identical issue with windows 10 - same error code as curiouser. Changed primary email address, re-installed icloud and outlook, but keep getting the same error message;

Your setup couldn't be started because of an unexpected error.
(MAPI 0x80040604)

Error: 0x80040604: Up/POST:Conflicts
Error: 0x80040604: Up/HdlPOSTr[p17-caldav.icloud.com/424/0#3/52]

It synchronises the contacts and then hangs for ages on downloading icloud calendar before throwing up the error message. It was working fine before, and is still working fine on the other computer and two iphones on the same account. Please, any suggestions or solutions would be more than welcome.

I'm having the same issue.

Outlook 2010 previously worked fine with iCloud on a PC running Windows 7. I then changed the primary email address associated with my iCloud account and when signing back in and attempting to re-integrate iCloud with Outlook, got the meaningless error message "Your setup couldn't be completed because of an unexpected error. (MAPI 0x80040604)"

I have followed the steps in your post above and it makes no difference, I keep returning to the error message.

I can manually add my @me email account in Outlook, which suggests the problem is with the iCloud control panel and not Outlook. I'd very much like to get my calendar and contacts back on this desktop PC.

FWIW I today used the Apple Software updater to pull down the latest version of the iCloud control panel.

Hello Mike-A,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are having an issue using Outlook with iCloud for Windows. After you made sure that the Outlook Add-in is on and restarted iCloud, iCloud stopped the sync and you received an error message. I can imagine that it's concerning to have an issue with something that previously worked perfectly. I'm happy to help assist you in finding the best resolution.

Use the article Get help using Outlook with iCloud for Windows, specifically, these sections:

Check your log-in settings

If you have multiple iCloud accounts, you might be logged in to iCloud for Windows with a different account than you are on your other devices. To check, open iCloud for Windows and compare it with your other devices.

Refresh Outlook

If you recently made changes in Outlook that aren't updating on your other devices, or changes on your other devices that aren't updating in Outlook, click Refresh in Outlook.

If you want iCloud as your default account for sending mail

You can change your Outlook settings so that emails are automatically sent from your iCloud account. To make iCloud the default account, follow these steps:

If you're using Outlook 2010:

  1. Go to File > Account Settings.
  2. Click Email.
  3. Choose your iCloud account from the list, then click Set as Default. If you can't click Set as Default, then your iCloud account is already the default account.

Make sure that the iCloud Outlook Add-in is on

The iCloud Outlook Add-in transfers your content between iCloud and Outlook. Follow these steps to turn on the Add-in:

In Outlook 2010 and later:

  1. Select the File menu.
  2. Click Options in the left panel.
  3. Click Add-ins in the left panel of the Outlook Options window.
  4. Look at the list of add-ins in the Active Application Add-ins section.
  5. Select the iCloud Outlook Add-in.

Make sure that iCloud isn’t your default account in Data Files

When iCloud is set as your default account in Data Files, your data won't sync between your devices.

Outlook 2010 and later:

  1. Select File > Info > Account Settings > Data Files.
  2. If iCloud is listed as the default account in the Comments column, select a different account.
  3. Click Set as Default.

Restart your computer

Turn your computer off and back on.

iCloud features that work differently in Outlook

Some iCloud features in Outlook work differently than they do on your Apple device. Here are a few tips to help you use Outlook with iCloud for Windows.

Mail and Notes

  • VIP Senders folders aren't available in Outlook.
  • Any mail rules that you create in Outlook aren't available in the mail applications for your other devices or on iCloud.com.
  • Signatures are saved locally to your device. You won't see signatures you create in Outlook on your other devices.

Notes isn't a separate application. Your notes are stored in a mail folder.

  • You'll find Notes that you create on your other devices in this folder.
  • Notes that you post to this folder from Outlook won't appear on your other devices, but you'll see them on any other computer using Outlook and iCloud for Windows when you're signed in with the same Apple ID.
  • You can delete notes from this folder and they'll be deleted from your other devices.

Contacts

  • Outlook will only import the first contact in a vCard set.
  • If you need to add a vCard set to Outlook, import the set directly into iCloud.com or OS X Contacts. We will bundle the entire set for you and add them as individuals to the your Contacts.

Calendars

When you add Calendar attachments to a Calendar entry in Outlook, you won't see them in Calendar for iOS, Calendar for OS X Mountain Lion, or iCal. (or the other way around)

Reminders (Tasks)

Like Calendars and Contacts, you need to enter your Reminders in the iCloud section of Tasks in Outlook. If you don't enter your Tasks into the iCloud section, they won't transfer to iCloud.
