Well hey there Bcirlan!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. The great thing about this particular issue, is that, it only requires a few steps to get us working again. I love having access to iMessages on my phone and laptop. By the way, excellent choice in computer. The MacBook Air is what I use and is my all-time favorite Apple device! It sounds like you would prefer to have your messages in sync on both devices? Let's make that happen.

Here's a simple rundown of the feature that we call SMS Continuity. Check out the section titled "SMS":

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac

And here is a wonderful breakdown of what your settings should look like on your Mac and your iPhone:

Add or remove your phone number in iMessage or FaceTime on your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac

Have a phenomenal day!
