unable to setup google account in Apple mail

We had our mail on an exchange server and used Apple mail for a client. Also had school google account that worked fine in Mail. Now migrated from exchange to google mail. Can log in fine if we go to google and sign in. If try set the google account in Mail, it will not work. Fails and says unable to set account up. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Steve L.

Hello Steve Larson,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding you're unable to add your Gmail account to the Mail app. Not a day goes by where I don't use my email, so I know accessing mail on any device is very important. I am happy to help.
Since you were able to sign in with Google, the next step is to verify the settings are accurate. Use the link below to compare the settings shown in your Mail preferences:

Here's some additional information on setting up and using Mail on your Mac:

Have a great day!
