10.11.6 el capitan update will not finish installing. hangs during restart. any help would be appreciated !

Sorry, should have provided more detail. The Computer in question is a Macbook Air 2012 version with a 500GB drive and 8GB of ram. The download of 10.11.6 update went fine, but when the computer restarted gray screen with Apple Logo and a progress bar comes up. That's when it hangs. I have left it up for two days with no change. Finally shutdown and restarted, computer comes up fine no worries. After several attempts have given up, unless someone can give me some insight as to what to do next.
