I had this problem that after start of iTunes it did not instantly open. Sometimes it took 4 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes until iTunes opened.
The solution for me is to plug in or unplug a memory stick on a free USB port. iTunes opens immediately afterwards. Disconnecting an USB wireless mouse adapter works too, but not with an apple device (iPad, iPhone).
