After calibrating your watch, you want to walk with your iPhone with location activated (in your privacy settings). Your iPhone will monitor your distance and calibrate your watch as you walk based on algorithms. The more you do this the more accurate your step count will be. Also keep in mind that, as with any activity tracker, your motions are counted by sensors; tip-toeing or walking softly most likely will not register. Conversely, if you flail your arm constantly, it will register these motions as steps. Also, if your arm that holds your watch is inactive while you walk/exercise your count will be less accurate.
