Q: On voice chat, the other person can hear the sound from my earbuds, as well as what I'm saying.

Basically, the input for my audio, for some reason, is picking up from both my microphone and my earbuds, it seems, which rather defeats the purpose. What can I do to fix this? It only happens sometimes, which is weird, because I'm not doing anything to the audio settings.

MacBook Air, currently running OSX 10.11.6, although I've had this problem recurring through multiple updates. I am just using the built-in microphone and basic, 10 dollar earbuds.

    Hi gonner85,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities! I understand you're having trouble with other people being able to hear the sounds from your earbuds and microphone while using voice chat. I use my Mac all the time to chat with family and friends and I can understand how this could be an annoyance for you. I'm happy to offer some suggestions.

The first thing that I recommend to do is make sure that your sound settings are set up with the correct input and output settings. You can take a look at the 'Change your sounds' section of the article below.

I also recommend to test with a different headset if you have one, just to rule out issues with the headset you're using. You can also try to start up your Mac in safe mode to test it out to see if the issue occurs. Starting up in safe mode clears some caches that could cause issues with your sound preferences. I also recommend to try setting up a test user account to see if this happens in another user also.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

One last step I recommend to try if you're still having trouble is to reset the NVRAM on your Mac which can help with issues with sound.

    Cheers!
