Q: 10.11.6 el capitan update will not install. Hangs during restart.

10.11.6 el capitan update will not finish installing.  hangs during restart. Computer is a Macbook Air 2012 version. Download of the update goes fine. When the computer restarts I get the gray screen with Apple logo and a progress bar.  Have waited two days but no progress.  Anybody got a fix.

    Hello bmwjoe,

Thank you for being part of the Apple Community!

If I understand correctly, you are unable to finish installing the latest OS X update.  Knowing how important it is to keep OS X up to date I will be happy to help with this.

The first thing I would do is backup everything that is on the computer. Nothing I am going to suggest should cause any data loss, but it is always a good idea to have a backup.  Your computer has software on it called Time Machine.  It is fantastic software for backing up your computer.  Information on how to use Time Machine is available here:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Once yu have a good backup, I would suggest starting the computer in Safe Mode and then install the update from there.  To start in Safe Mode follow these instructions:

    1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.

You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

Once in Safe Mode, continue with the upgrade as normal.

    Have a great day!

Sorry Johann.B no joy. Ended up reinstalling El Capitan from scratch along with updates. Took awhile but it worked. Thanks for your input, very much appreciated!
